Dirk Bruinsma originally assembled Pumporgan specially for the 2011 North Sea Jazz Festival 2011. With this band he performed the composition assignment awarded to him for that year. Hijinks and Jitters was the title of a series of pieces which he wrote in a style he calls PsychoJive. In this hybrid style he marries the typically complex rhythms of his compositions for Blast (the band he co-founded in 1989) with the dance-like qualities the title refers to. Its grooves will grab the listener and force him to a wild dance, which may at any moment make room for an imaginative sound experiment, or may turn a corner to produce a hypnotizing barrage of staccato notes (without ever losing the pulse). Because the leader regularly switches between alto saxophone and bass guitar, he may join Christian Ferlaino‘s baritone sax (thus creating a mini horn section) or latch on to Jeroen Kimman who picks up the guitar instead of the bass guitar, for a more electric sound. Nout Ingen Housz is exactly the kind of creative drummer the band needs: tight where he has to be, but also a master of subtlety and tonal coloring. The latter can also be said of Wilbert Bulsink, who succeeds in having his Hammond organ sound both vintage and contemporary. For the catchy mix of avant rock, rhythm & blues, rockabilly and swing demands such a flexibility.
