chra & Cherry Sunkist (Austria)
black black black black no. 1
Sound performance
chra’s and Cherry Sunkist’s sound performance takes place in complete darkness, allowing the listener to rely on her ears and imagination, rather than her eyes; to experience sound in a public, yet intimate, setting. Their experimental mix of pop, dub, minimal techno, and ambiental electronic music is played at different volumes, and from different angles. black black black black nr. 1 encourages the audience to approach chra’s and Cherry Sunkist’s ever-changing soundscape actively, by moving through the space and in between other listeners. chra plays with sinus waves, created with shareware sound effects. She processes them with tape recorders, the 4-track-machine, bass guitar, samplers, and software for music production. Her low frequencies and dark sounds merge with Cherry Sunkist’s vocal and musical experiments that range from distorted noise to melodic pop tunes.
chra (Christina Nemec) has been performing and DJ-ing since the mid 1990’s. Her latest releases include Sonic Travel Diary (2012) and Der Mann das ist ein Lustobjekt (2012). In 2009, she cofounded the record label Comfortzone to support local musicians, including Cherry Sunkist. She has played in feminist-queer groups (SV Damenkraft, The APP, Femous Orchestra) and collaborated with Lydia Lunch, Mia Zabelka, Gustav, Mathias Schaffhäuser, and many others. She has toured in Austria, Germany, Slovenia, Norway, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay.
